You can have OpenDocMan installed on your web server from InterServer in just a minute or less if you use the one-click installation option that is included with all hosting accounts. Once installed, you will have to go through a number of steps to get things setup the way you want it. Since this system is made to keep files on the Internet, you need to ensure only the right people have access to them, which means setting up user permissions for those who need them. Depending on how many people you have that need access, this can take some time. While not very difficult, the overall setup time can be lengthy in some cases.
Features
This system has all the main features that you would expect with a free document management system. You can give access to an unlimited number of users, they have a nice feature where files can be checked in and out to ensure there aren’t conflicts, and much more. Some features are only available on the premium version, such as creating custom workflow solutions, batch importing, and in-browser previews. These would be nice features to have available, though most people won’t be too concerned that they can’t have them.
Plugins
There is a nice plugin system that allows you to add in some additional features. These plugins are not free, however, so keep that in mind when deciding whether or not this is the right document management system for you. They only offer a handful of different plugins, but due to the type of system this is, that is really all you’ll need. They do, however, have a ‘skeleton’ plugin, which gives you a base from which you can more easily code your own plugins, which is a nice feature that other systems don’t have.

There isn’t too much that can be customized with this system, but that is normal for document management products. You can add in plugins to make it more functional, but even that isn’t going to customize it much. The real customization will come with creating your own permissions and access controls for the users that are setup to access the system.

The plugins that they offer also cost money, but they aren’t strictly necessary for use.
