Varnish is not in use. We do use Litespeed webserver on shared hosting, which is 100% apache compatible.

Apache is the most common webserver. You'll find most shared hosts that are Linux will be using apache.

Apache uses the .htaccess file to do things like rewrite rules. Many alternative webserver's do not support this .htaccess file, but litespeed does.
