Some beginner VPS questions

Okay, considering the move from shared hosting to VPS, and have some questions that are probably very basic, but I truly have no idea...

1) If I'm going to have multiple domains on my VPS, is a control panel such as Cpanel essential, or can it me managed some other way?

2) Does the VPS set up come with MySQL installed, or is that something I need to do myself? Or does it come with either the OS or platform option I choose when buying?

That's all for now, cheers.

Its possible to manage everything through SSH. If you take centos yum can be used, for example:

yum -y install mysql-server php httpd

This will install apache, php, mysql. You can use: yum search php for possible extensions you need.

Doing this, you'll need to manually configure any apache vhosts / create user's on your own.

So overall, yes it is possible, but cpanel does make it much easier.

So sounds like I might be saving myself some pain by using Cpanel, coming from a shared hosting environment?

And MySQL, would I then set that up via Cpanel, or is it included in the VPS setup?

cPanel does include mysql preinstalled.

Coming from a shared environment I recommend going with cpanel.
