Trouble Uploading Wordpress themes to a VPS Wordpress Site

I have a VPS Wordpress installation.

When I am in the Wordpress admin panel and I choose to upload a new theme from a file that is in .zip format it will not upload it.

I can upload the files with SFTP but that defeats the purpose of being able to upload and install themes right from the Wordpress admin panel.

Is the issue with Wordpress or is it with the VPS access?

Thanks

This sounds like apache/php is running as a dso with out mod_ruid2. Apache is therefore writing as a different user than the ftp/sftp user. Solutions are

change apache user
replace php to run as suphp or mod_ruid2 (fast cgi too is ok)

Contact support for more info on this.

Some people think a set up where webserver is a different user is more secure. It can be because scripts can not be written like uploading a php shell.

In this case, there might be something in the theme files conflicting with one of your plugins. Most of the time this means that one of your plugins (or the theme) is poorly coded. Once all of your plugins are disabled, log out of your WordPress account. Log back in, then attempt to upload the WordPress theme file.
