Websites to test if a website is up or not?

What are the best websites to test if a website is up or not? I find myself wondering this not only for my sites, but also for other sites that I use daily, but I never know if it's just my internet/computer or if it's just really down.

isup.me is great! If it's my own site and it's not responding the way I expect, I'll usually plug it into http://www.webpagetest.org
You can have it test from various parts of the world, and it gives great info on exactly what is taking time to load on your page. Also time to first byte gives you a vague idea of web server performance versus load.

One other test I do is wget (on linux).
An example with google

wget http://google.com

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 301 Moved Permanently

isup.me/website.com is a good one, and if you want to monitor your own sites and see if they are going down, you should try Pingdom.

Command prompt is a great way to ping a website because you can see at what point in the "path" your ping is shooting up at. I found my ISP was actually the weak link when having trouble gaming, which I addressed with a phone call. Handy information, and got me credit on my bill!

Are there any tools that track the uptime of your site, so it's not a one off test but a constant tracking? I know Alexa offer this but at a cost. Any free services?

I always use isup.com. It's simple, not too much stuff on the page, it just simply tells you that is it actually down or not.

@MorgUK Pingdom is pretty good, I'm on their free plan. They let you know the uptime at the end of each month.
Cheers Yanz, will take a look. I've used some of the Pingdom tools, like the site speedtest, but I didn't realise they have an uptime tool! I love free tools! :)

I've used statscrop and I'm pretty sure that it tells you if the website is up or not. However, I'm not a hundred percent sure, and it would be nice to see other people's recommendations and how well they work.
