How to Backup and Restore Emails in Roundcube

Posted on March 4th, 2017

In this tutorial we can check how to backup and restore emails in Roundcube

In cPanel, it is possible to backup your emails using both web interfaces – Roundcube or Horde. In this documentation, we can discuss about how to backup and restore emails in Roundcube web interface.

Use the following link to access cPanel webmail.

If you want to backup the whole folder or account, we recommend to use Horde web interface. Roundcube does not provide convenient functionality to download many emails at once.

Follow the steps below to perform the backup and restore process in Roundcube web interface.

1) Login to your cPanel webmail using Roundcube web interface.

2) To backup emails to your local computer, select the required email and click on the ‘More’ icon from the taskbar.

3) Select the ‘Download (.eml) ‘option from the dropdown list and specify the location to save the emails.

Backup and Restore

The backup process has been completed now.

4) To import the emails you have downloaded, click on the Gear icon and choose the ‘Import messages‘ option.

5) A new window will be opened. Here you can choose the backup file you wish to be imported from the ‘Choose Files’ option. After selecting the backup file, click the ‘Upload’ button.

Once it has been completed, you will get a notification message that ‘Successfully imported 1 message’.

There is no easy way. You need to follow the same steps for each account.

Just for clarification, I have an email account with many sub folders. IF I select the download option of all the email will it keep the folders or will i have to download each folder separately and then recreate and upload them individually to my new mail program. That is what I suspect is the method.

This is super annoying so i found a workaround.

Highlight the emails you wish to download and use the forward as attachment option.
To avoid the attachment limit do not send the email to yourself, Simply save it as a draft and then save the draft to your desktop.

You will then have one email on your desktop with the rest of your inbox as attachments inside.
I tested with outlook and was able to access all of the mails.

          Hope this helps.

    Hi There

For Roundcube 1.1 I found this very easy way to download all the emails at once:

    https://docs.roundcube.net/doc/help/1.1/en_US/mail/importexport.html

I can not find that button in my version (1.3.10) anymore. Do I get that right: it’s not hiden somewhere, it’s just gone??? 🙁

    Thank you
    Philipp

  7. Jed says:

I can’t see the button referenced in that article either.

There really ought to be an option to backup the whole mailbox in one file or zip.

    Cheers
