How to Enable URL rewriting in Joomla

URL rewriting allows you to show beautiful URLs to your customers that they can understand. We have to enable URL rewriting to make the URLs as beautiful as you can see in the URL bar right now for this article. Without URL rewriting, your URLs will contain numbers and lots of things that might not even help your customers understand what they might find in the link.

URL rewriting also0 helps you with the SEO. It is because if the URLs are easy to understand and has some keywords in it, Search engines will rank it higher than the URLs that are hard to understand and does not contain any keyword in it.

For example, Here is the URL with URL rewriting disabled.

https://somesite.com?p=1232

And here is the same URL with URL rewriting enabled.

https://somesite.com/how-to-enable-url-rewriting-in-joomla/

You can clearly see the difference between these two URLs. One is very hard to understand the later gives you an idea what you might find in the URL if you decide to click on it.

You can do the same thing in Joomla. For that, you have to enable URL rewriting, and that is what I am going to show you in this tutorial. So, Let’s get started.

Enable URL rewriting in Joomla

First of all, log in to the admin panel of your site. Then, click on the System -> Global Configuration option. See the following screenshot for reference.

Now, you will see a global configuration page with multiple tabs. Click on the Site tab to see or update the global site settings.

On this page, you will find a lot of options. Under the SEO Settings section, find the Use URL Rewriting option and enable it by clicking on the Yes.

Now, Click on the Save button given at the top-left corner of the page to apply the changes.

So, this is how you can enable URL rewriting in Joomla. It is very much important to enable URL rewriting just after installing Joomla using Softaculous. It is because once the site is indexed and has a handful of pages in search results and interlinked already, it is hard to update the URLs.
