How to Add a YouTube Video to Your WordPress Posts

Posted on October 23rd, 2015

Adding a YouTube video to any post or page or even the text widget on your WordPress blog is a quick and simple process which shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. If you want to display video content from a similar video sharing site, the process will usually be quite similar to the one detailed in this guide. By embedding videos, your visitors can view them without leaving your website. The videos will not actually be hosted on your own site either, so they won’t consume your own bandwidth.

  1. Go to youtube.com or any other similar video sharing website. Navigate to the video you would like to embed in you blog post or page and click on the “Share” button below the video.
  2. Click on “Embed” to display the code necessary to embed the content. You do not need to edit the code manually in order to customize it, since you can use the more user-friendly options provided. Specify a video size and select or deselect the other options as required. Double-click on the code in the text box above to select it and press CTRL and C on your keyboard to copy it to the clipboard.
  3. Log in to your WordPress administrator dashboard and open the post or page you want to add the video to. Alternatively, create a new post or page as required. Simply paste the code you just copied into the location of the post or page where you want it to be displayed. Save your changes for the video to appear on your blog immediately.
  4. Alternatively, you can have the video appear on every page of your blog in the sidebar or other widget area. Simply navigate to the “Appearance” section in your administrator dashboard and click on “Widgets”. Drag the Text widget to your preferred widget area in the right-side column. Click the widget to open the configuration dialog and paste the code into the text box. Enter a title and click “Save”. The video will now appear on your blog.

Most other video sharing and hosting websites provide a similar functionality to that which YouTube has, enabling you to easily embed content into another blog or website without having to manually write down the necessary code.
