Step 1: First, go to the “Settings” option on the left-hand side panel of the dashboard. Then select the “Shortpixel” option under the settings.
Step 2: You will be directed to the short pixel setting page. To optimize the images using this plugin, you need to validate the API key. If you already have an API key, you can enter the API key in the box and click on “Validate.” If you don’t have an API key, enter your email address to get the API key. You will get the API key in your email. You can use that API key. Or Also, it allows you to change it to any valid email address that you own. Click on the “Request API key” after entering your email address.
Step 3: Once you get the API key on mail, you can copy the API key. And paste in the API key field to validate it.
Step 4: You will be directed to the setup page of ShortPixel. There will be four sections – General, Advanced, Cloudflare API, Statistics, and WP resources. Click on the “General” tab. In this section, you can select the compression type from – Lossy, Glossy and lossless. It also allows you to take a test that will help you decide which option you should go for. However, the Lossy compression type is recommended because it offers the best compression rate. It also maintains the pixels and quality of the original image during the compression process.
Step 5: Now, you can also apply compression to the image thumbnail. To enable this option, click on “Apply compression also to image thumbnail” under the “Also include thumbnails” section. This option is highly recommended that you optimize the thumbnails as they are usually the images most viewed by end-users. Also, it helps you to generate the most traffic.
Step 6: You can also save and have a backup of your original images in a separate folder. You will have an image backup section. The plugin also provides the option of removing the EXIF tag from the pictures. EXIF is a set of various pieces of information that are automatically embedded into the image upon creation. It can include GPS position, camera manufacturer, date and time, etc. The removal of EXIF data will lead to a better compression rate. You can easily resize larger images into smaller sizes. In that case, you can enable the option “Automatically optimize images added by users in the front end” under the Process in front-end option.

Step 9: The plugin has Cloudflare integration. So, if you are using Cloudflare, then you can insert the API key of Cloudflare in the box. It will allow ShortPixel to work seamlessly with Cloudflare. So that any image optimized or restored by ShortPixel will be automatically updated on Cloudflare as well. You have to enter the Zone ID, which is available in the overview section of the Cloudflare dashboard. Then you can enter the Cloudflare token or Global API key.
Click on “Save Changes.”
The Statistics section will show the disk space saved, average compression rate, and bandwidth saved by short pixels. You can also check the size of the backup folder.
