Posted on May 16th, 2022

There are two types of professionals – those who work hard and others who work hard and smart. The most excellent level of success is found in people who balance hard work and intelligent work. It is a certain truth in the world of internet marketing.

As a blogger, you need to work day and night to build great content, drive traffic and make money from ads. If you want to make a passive income stream, make money while you sleep, and enjoy the internet lifestyle, consider monetizing your site with Adsense.

Google Adsense is the world’s number one advertisement network to start earning money online with your website. It allows you to sell your website’s ad space to advertisers and get paid. This article will show you how to add Google AdSense in WordPress and some best practices to increase your earnings. But, first, let’s understand Google Adsense, and it’s working. Let’s dive in.

What is Google AdSense?

Google AdSense is an advertisement network run by Google that allows bloggers an opportunity to make money by showing interactive advertisements on their websites. These ads are highly relevant as they’re targeted by site content and audience. Google AdSense is a hassle-free advertising network because you don’t have to deal with advertisers or don’t have to worry about collecting money. Instead, Google maintains relationships with advertisers. Then, Google Adsense collects the payment, takes their management fee, and sends the rest of the money to website owners.

AdSense offers cost-per-click ads, which means you earn money every time a user clicks on an ad on your website. The amount obtained per click varies depending on various factors. Google Adsense will also decide which type of ads will be displayed on your website. It uses an ad auction and automatically displays the ads on your website as per the audience and content. We need a Google Account to sign in and a WordPress website to show ads.

Adding Google Adsense to your website is an easy process, which is divided into 3 different steps. There are some basic requirements which we need first. We require a Google Adsense account, WordPress Website Admin Area and Adsense integration to your WordPress website. So, let’s create a Google Adsense account first, then follow the steps accordingly.

Create An Google Adsense Account

Step 1: First, you have to create a Google AdSense account. Here, if you have any google services accounts like Gmail. Then, you can quickly sign up for a Google Adsense account. So, Open any browser, then go to the Google Adsense web page from the link, as seen in the image below.

Step 2: Click Get Started to open the sign-up page to create an account and log in with your Adsense or Google account.

Step 3: Next, we have an agreement, so click on the checkbox to accept the condition.

Step 4: Click on the Continue To Adsense button, just like the screen below.

Step 5: Enter your site URL without “HTTP://” just like the image below. Then, enter your Email Address in the below field.

Step 6: The third option will help you catch the important details about your Adsense account in your inbox. So, Click on Yes, as you can see in the below image. Then, Click on Save and continue.

Step 7: On the next screen, choose your Country and Click on the Checkbox as Yes, I Accept all the Terms & Conditions. Then, Click on Create Account, just like the screen below.

Step 8: Click on Get Started to go to the Payment address details page. Choose your account type, add your full name, address, and phone number, then click Submit to complete the account setup. You will see a screen just like the image below.

Now we have to add a website to this Adsense Account. So let’s get started.

Add Your Website To Google Adsense

In this step, you will need to submit the website on which you want to display ads for Google Adsense approval. We will start from the last tutorial screen. Now, follow the steps from here.

Step 1: In your Adsense account’s side menu, click on the Sites Option.

Step 2: Then Click on the Add Site button, as shown in the image below.

Step 3: On this screen, Add the URL of your site where you want to display ads. You can see the example below of the field too. Now click on the Save and continue button.

Step 4: Here, on the next page, we have a short script that we need to add to our website. Scroll down the page and find a white text area like the screen below. Click on the copy text to have a copy of your site’s Adsense tracking code.

Important: Before clicking Request Review, you must copy the Adsense code to your WordPress site. So, follow the next topic.

Add Google Adsense Code To Your Site

There are various ways to copy the Adsense code to your WordPress site.

Let me explain them one by one.

Using A Google Adsense Plugin

One of the safest methods of adding the Adsense code to your WordPress site is using a plugin. By using this method, your code will stay unchanged even if you change your site’s theme.

There are various plugins for this purpose, but we will use Advanced Ads to demonstrate.

Step 1: Go to the WordPress Admin area dashboard using Username and Password. Then, Hover your cursor on the plugins tab option and click on Add New, as shown in the below image.

Step 2: Search for the Google Adsense and Find the Right plugin on the next screen. Then, Click on Install Now button, as you can see in the below image. Then, click on the Activate button to activate the plugin.

Step 3: In your WordPress website’s dashboard, go to the Site Kit available on the left side of the screen.

Step 4: Then, click on the SIGN IN WITH GOOGLE button and Connect to your Google Adsense account, as shown in the image below. The continue button permits the connection request.

Step 5: Next, click on Allow to grant permission. Then click on the Next button and continue the process. Then, click on Next to complete the process another time, as you can see in the image below.

Step 6: Now go back to the Adsense window and click on the Request Review button, as shown in the below image.

If you’ve connected the accounts correctly, you will see the confirmation message from Google Adsense. It means your account has been successfully submitted for review. You should get an approval email soon. If not, follow the steps ahead to add a code tutorial manually.

Manually Adding Google Adsense

Additionally, you can manually add Google Adsense code to your site by copying it to your site’s code. We do not recommend this method because most users add code to their site’s header.php file. There is nothing wrong with this method if you never plan to change the theme of your website. But if you change your theme, you will need to re-enter the code.

Adding Code To Your Website’s Header

You will need to copy/paste your Google Adsense code on every website page or the different places where you need to display the ads. In WordPress, you can add it to your site’s header.php file as WordPress loads this file on each page of your site. But instead of editing header.php directly, we recommend using the header and footer scripts plugin.

Follow the steps to add an Adsense code to your website’s header.

Step 1: Go to your WordPress dashboard, then hover your mouse on the plugins tab and click on Add New option from the tab.

Step 2: Search for the header and footer scripts plugin, and click on the install now button after finding the right plugin. Here, Click on the Activate button to activate the plugin.

Step 3: Now, go to the Settings tab and hover the mouse, then click Header and Footer Scripts, the last option as you can see in the image below.

Step 4: Here, on the setting screen, we have two options to add the Google Adsense code. The first white text area is here for the header, and another is for the footer. You can see the image below as a reference.

Step 5: Paste your AdSense tracking code into Scripts in the header box. Then, Click on Save Settings, as you can see in the image below.

Note: You’ve successfully added an Adsense script to your site’s header.php file without directly tinkering with the code. You can go back to your Adsense and submit your application for review.

Adding Code To A Widget

If your theme has sidebars and widgets, you can add Adsense code to the sidebars of the pages of your site using a custom widget. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Log in to your WordPress site’s dashboard. Then, Go and hover your cursor on the Appearance tab section from the sidebar and click on Widgets, as you can see in the image below.

Step 2: Now, Click on the “+” icon and search for HTML, as you can see in the image below.

Step 3: Then, Click on the HTML widget or drag it to the sidebar section on the widgets page, as shown below.

Step 4: Paste your Adsense code into the custom HTML text box shown in the image below.

Step 5: Click on the Update button to apply changes.

We just successfully added Adsense code to your site’s sidebar. Here, You can go back to your Adsense and submit your website for review.

Create Ad Units For Your Website

Once Google Adsense approves your site, you can start displaying various ads on your site. The advertisement window will automatically match up with your display style. You can even customise the font and background colours. Adsense gives you options for creating ads and allows you to display them anywhere on your site. Here is how to create an advertisement for your WordPress site. So, let’s get started.

Step 1: Sign in to your Google Adsense account homepage, Then click on Ads available on the right side of the screen, as shown in the below image.

Step 2: Go to the Buy Ad Unit tab in the Ad section. Here, you’ll see four different types of ads. All they have their default styles like display ads, in-feed ads, and in-article ads, as well as multiplex ads in the image below.

Step 3: Select the appropriate option as per your requirement. We select display ads for this tutorial. Click the first option called display ads to open the ad creation page.

Step 4: Enter the name of your ad unit, select the ad layout from the options, and, if you want to customise your ads to the visitor’s device, then change them from the Add Size drop-down, as you can see in the image below. Then, Click on the Create button.

Step 5: This added unit will provide an HTML code like the image below on the next screen. We have to Copy the ad unit code by clicking on the copy code snippet just below the text area. Then click on the Done button, just like the image below.

Note: Now, you can Paste code wherever you want the ad to appear on your site. Once you copy and paste the code into your site, it may take a few minutes for the ad to appear.

You can view your ad unit statistics and edit its appearance from the ads section in your Google Adsense account.

As I showed you in this article, adding Google Adsense to your WordPress site is easy.

However, to increase your AdSense revenue, you need to constantly optimise your ads by analysing the performance of individual ad units and trying out different ad types and positions on your site. Once you find the location and type of ad that works best on your site, apply it to all pages of your site and remove any unnecessary ad units.

What are the minimum requirements to get Google AdSense application approved?

Here are some minimum requirements to get your Google AdSense account application approved. Your website and its content must comply with AdSense program policies and terms and conditions. Your website should be at least six months old. The applicant or publisher must be over 18 years old.

Note: Even if your application fulfils all the requirements, Google AdSense still has the right to decline your application.

Best AdSense Placement?

It depends entirely on your layout. The goal is to get more clicks and impressions, so you should place your ads in a more prominent position. We have found that ads within content get the most clicks at the top of the screen. Some users have asked us to add AdSense to the floating widget as it will be very prominent. However, we strongly recommend it as the Google Terms of Service do not permit it. If you violate their Terms of Service, you may be banned from the program.

Conclusion

In 2003, Adsense was the world’s premier advertisement network used by over 3 million active websites to monetize their content. It was one of the first advertisement platforms to reward website owners and publishers for displaying ads on their sites. By adding Google Adsense to your site, you can instantly monetize your content and become part of the ever-growing Google Publisher community.
