Use Custom RBL with cPanel

cPanel is the most used control panel in the World through which we can manage our websites and settings easily via a User-Friendly interface. We can setup cPanel to use custom RBLs and this will allow to configuring the mail server to check incoming mail against the available RBLs, through which we can prevent incoming spamming to your server much more. The RBL is the short form of Real-time Blackhole List and also known as DNS Black List (DNSBL), which is a list of IP/domain whose owners refused to stop the spamming. It is a dynamic list of active spammers or spam sources, sometimes the RBL may include Internet service providers (ISP) with customers that are known spammers or ISP servers that are hijacked for spamming purposes. By using this on a cPanel server before accepting an email from an IP the mail server will connect to these RBLs to make sure that this IP is from non-spammers.

This way we can reduce many incoming spams to our server, but please note that there can be some false positive too. In this case, we can easily manage this via cPanel user-friendly interface. cPanel comes with SpamCop and SpamHaus RBLs by default. But you would need to turn on these on your cPanel/WHM interface as by default they are turned off on a cPanel server.

Let’s see the steps on how we can use custom RBLs with cPanel/WHM here.

1) Login to your server WHM by going to http://yourserverIP:2086 or https://yourserverIP:2087 and go to “Service Configuration” page there.

There you can view the default added RBLs as mentioned above, you can turn on these by flagging the option to “On” and save the configuration by click on “Save” button. To use custom RBLs, click on the “Manage” button there, and this should open another interface to add the custom RBL details.

On this new interface, you would need to enter the new RBL details. This will then save to the exim configuration file on your server once click on “Add” button at the bottom.

Also, please note that your email server will be dead if any of the custom RBL you have added/configured has stopped working.
